Knowing how to operate your pool equipment is essential for pool maintenance. Your pool equipment is generally referred to as the “filtration system” and includes a pool pump, filter, and a chlorinator.

Pool Pump - This moves the pool water from the skimmer box through the filter, and back to the pool.
Your pool pump will usually be turned on and off by a timer (generally controlled by the chlorinator). The pump basket requires occasional cleaning/emptying.

Pool Filter - The majority of pool filters are either sand or glass media filters, which remove the fine dust, dirt and organic matter out of the water. This needs to be cleaned by ‘backwashing’ and ‘rinsing’. There are also cartridge filters which require manual cleaning by removing and hosing.

Pool Chlorinator - This creates chlorine to sanitise your pool water through the process of electrolysis of the salt or minerals in the pool water. There are two parts of a chlorinator; the cell which generates the chlorine and the control unit that contains the timer (which turns your pool pump on and off) and adjusts the chlorine production levels. Some chlorinator cells require occasional cleaning when calcium builds up on the cell plates.
