Getting Your Pool Water Level Right!

Rain or Shine - our quick guide to managing your pool water level!

We often see pools running into trouble during extreme weather - whether it's too much rain or long dry spells! While it might seem like a "set and forget" part of pool maintenance, incorrect water levels can cause real headaches if not managed properly.

"My pool is overflowing!" or "The water's getting low after lots of sunny days" are concerns we hear regularly. The answer isn't always straightforward, but here's what you need to know.

The perfect pool water level

The ideal level of your pool water should sit halfway up the skimmer box opening - this is the sweet spot for perfect operation. Too high or too low, and you could run into problems with your pump, automatic cleaner or skimming action.

When your pool water level is too high

When it's too high, you run the risk of your pool overflowing from heavy rain, so you might need to drain some water. We also advise checking that your drainage around the pool isn't blocked with leaves or debris. A blocked drain can cause water around your swimming pool to flow back into your clean pool water!

*Always ensure your pool pump is turned off before starting any draining process, and use the Waste setting, not Backwash!!

When your pool water level is too low

Long periods without rain, combined with hot weather and regular swimming, can quickly lower your pool water level. If the water drops below the skimmer box opening, your pump could run dry and potentially burn out - an expensive fix that's easily avoided!

*When topping up your pool with fresh water, remember to have your water tested for phosphates afterwards. This helps prevent algae growth and keeps your pool crystal clear.

By simply looking at your skimmer box opening, you’ll know straight away if you need to add or remove water. By preempting heavy rain or longer periods of hot weather you can ensure your filtration system works efficiently and your pump stays happy and healthy.
