Green Pool Treatment Guide

Green pool treatments can vary, depending on how much algae is in the water. Usually, by the time you notice your green pool, the algae treatment requires a little bit of effort to get it clean.

Cleaning a green pool where you can see the bottom of the pool will generally clean up using a combination of chlorine, algaecide, an oxidiser & a clarifier to treat the water along the filtration system. Whereas, a green pool where you cannot see the bottom or those that contain lots of leaves and debris will require a lot more effort and potentially a process called floccing.

Green pool treatment will also be affected by:

  1. Size of the pool

  2. How long the pool has been green

  3. How much and what type of debris is at the bottom of the pool

  4. How good your water circulation is (pump size)

  5. How clean/efficient filter media or cartridge element is

*We recommend the following treatment procedure for green pools where you can see the bottom. If you cannot see the bottom of the pool, please contact us for further instructions. If after the first treatment attempt, the pool has not improved, consult us to find alternative options.

Steps to treat a green pool (can see the bottom)

  1. Check the levels of chlorine, pH & Alkalinity at the pool shop & pick up any chemicals you need such as extra chlorine, acid/pH increaser, algaecide, oxidiser & clarifier.

  2. Empty the skimmer & pump baskets & detach your suction cleaner & remove vacuum plate.

  3. Backwash/clean the filter thoroughly and check the pressure when finished (important to change the gauge if it’s not working).

  4. Rake/scoop the bottom to remove as much debris as possible & brush the pool walls & floor.
*This must be done thoroughly! Even if you cannot see it, the more debris that can be removed now the more effective the process will be.

  5. Add the suggested green pool treatment chemicals as directed.

  6. Set your filter to run continuously for 24-48 hrs and maintain a high chlorine level until clear.

  7. Once the pool is clear you will need to backwash/clean your filter, then bring another water sample to use for a test and re-balance the water as well as re-set your filtration times back to auto.

If no significant improvement is observed within 48hrs bring a sample in-store to re-test along with a progress photo.
