Robotic Cleaner Maintenance Guide

Robotic cleaner maintenance, as with most pool equipment, is really important to ensure it’s doing the best job for you. Each year we suggest giving your cleaner a really good once over to keep it going for another 12 months of hard work!

Robots are workhorses in the pool, doing hundreds of hours of scrubbing, sucking & filtering each year. These are the things we suggest to check at home, or alternatively you can bring your unit into us and we’ll give it a full once over.

Step 1 - Check & clean your baskets

The first thing to do is to take out the cleaner from the pool and remove the filter basket. You would have done this many times before, so once it’s empty, give it a good hose from the outside until it’s visually clean, and check it over for any cracks, holes, or damage. If it’s clean, pop it back in and move to step 2, or contact us if you need to replace your filter.

Step 2 - Clean the unit

We suggest giving the whole unit a good hose down, ensuring that you get into all the scrubbers and wheels, and gently turning them as you go to remove any all built-up dust and dirt.

Step 3 - The visual inspection

Things to check are the wheels, tracks, and brushes to ensure that they’re still in good condition, any signs of damage or heavy wear to these parts should be replaced. Check for any loose connections on the swivels or power cables should be reviewed by a professional to ensure it doesn’t cause further damage and a more expensive repair.

Step 4 - Cables, swivels & caddy

The power supply cable can show signs of wear and tear from dragging across the ground or sharp edges of the pool. If this is wearing away, try to reduce the contact point of the cable or if it has worn away too much, it’s important for your safety to replace it. Any units with a swivel fitted may also become stuck in position, or too loose, check this is still ok by gently twisting the swivel. Clean and check the caddy for damage and make sure you caddy’s on/off button isn’t malfunctioning, if you’re having issues, bring it in for repair.

Step 5 - Running test

Make sure all the parts are in and secure, and pop the cleaner in the pool for a quick test. Once you’re happy, pull it out of the water, give it another quick rinse with the hose (we suggest doing this every time the cleaner is removed from the pool), and coil the power supply cord neatly and kink-free, then store it in the shade and in its caddy where possible. Some newer cleaners are designed to stay in the pool so they can be returned to the water once back together.

These simple steps will help you not only extend the life of your robot, it will also ensure it’s doing the best job possible.

Bonus Tip

If dirty water or debris is still escaping back into the water, we recommend that you check the following:

  • Remove the filter basket; check the four springs in the bottom of the unit. Make sure there is no debris clogging the springs and that they move freely.

  • Check the intake opening on the bottom side of the cleaner and remove any obstructions.

  • Check that the rapid drain flap is in place. (The flap is a black rubber part located behind the rear wheels and is visible by turning the unit upside down).

When you remove your Dolphin from the water, gently guide it towards you using the cable or use the lift function on select models. Once you manage to reach it, grab it by the handle, (never lift the robot out of the water by the cable!). Tilt the robot and place it on the edge of the pool and let the water drain back into the pool.

If you’re still having issues, bring it in to your nearest store or contact us to inspect & repair your cleaner.
